What is laparoscopy?

Laparoscopy is a minimally-invasive surgical technique that can be used to treat many medical issues. The technique is used not only in gynecology, but in many other types of surgery as well, including abdominal surgery and joint replacement procedures. Laparoscopy uses instruments designed to work through small incisions, avoiding the need for larger incisions so patients enjoy a faster and more comfortable recovery as well as a reduced risk of infection. The laparoscope is thin and flexible, and a small camera device at the end of the instrument provides clear images that are transmitted to a video screen where the doctor can see them. Many minimally-invasive surgeries can be performed on an outpatient basis.

What conditions can be treated with laparoscopy?

In gynecology, laparoscopy can be used to perform procedures like:

  • Hysterectomy
  • Fibroid removal
  • Removal of scars or adhesions, cysts and some other growths
  • Fertility treatments
  • Tubal ligation
  • Treatment of ectopic pregnancy
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease treatment

Laparoscopy is also used to perform biopsies and to diagnose causes of pelvic pain and other symptoms and conditions.

How is a laparoscopic procedure performed?

That depends on the condition being addressed, but generally speaking, laparoscopy is performed under either sedation and local anesthesia or under general anesthesia. Most procedures are performed in outpatient settings, meaning you can go home the same day. Once you've been sedated, a small incision is made in the abdomen and the scope is inserted. Gas is pumped into the area to provide a better view for the doctor. One or two other small incisions are made to provide access for the special surgical instruments. If the procedure is being performed strictly for diagnosis, only one incision may be required. Most laparoscopic procedures take no more than 90 minutes to perform. After the procedure is complete, you'll remain in a recovery area for awhile for monitoring before being discharged.

All minimally invasive surgies are performed in office.
