What is gynecological surgery?

Gynecological surgery includes all the traditional and minimally-invasive surgical options for correcting issues that affect the reproductive organs, including the ovaries, fallopian tubes and uterus. Today, there are many types of surgical options that can be used to correct or treat an array of issues, including hysterectomy (removal of the uterus), oophorectomy (removal of the ovaries), endometrial ablation (removal of the uterine lining), fibroid removal, treatment of endometriosis, removal of scar tissue or cysts and correction of structural abnormalities.

How are hysterectomies performed?

A hysterectomy can be performed using a traditional “open” surgical technique with a larger incision, laparoscopically using small incisions in the abdomen, or intravaginally, removing the uterus through the vagina without a need for external incisions. The technique used will depend on several factors, including your overall health and the reason for the hysterectomy. Hysterectomy can be full or partial, removing all the uterus or leaving the cervix behind, and it may be performed along with an oophorectomy, or removal of the ovaries. Hysterectomies are performed using general anesthesia.

What is endometrial ablation?

Endometrial ablation is a technique used to erase the lining of the uterus in women who have heavy menstrual bleeding. While some women may have a return of their periods following the procedure, many women will not, and so endometrial ablation is usually considered for women who are done having children. The procedure is performed in an outpatient setting.

What is LEEP?

LEEP is an acronym for loop electrosurgical excision procedure, a minimally-invasive outpatient procedure for removing genital warts and abnormal cells that need to be further evaluated in a lab. LEEP uses a looped wire and low-voltage electricity to target tissue without the need for traditional cutting techniques, resulting in less bleeding.

All minimally invasive surgies are performed in office by Dr. Frenkel.
